The San Marcos Police Mental Health Unit utilizes a border collie mix named Sheldon Cooper to assist officers on calls by attempting to decrease anxiety and stress that people in crisis may be experiencing. Sheldon also assists at the Scheib Center in San Marcos and meets with clients dealing with stress when requested.
Sheldon's handler, Officer Joyce Bender, has taken Sheldon to a training program in Florida where they became a nationally registered therapy dog team. Sheldon is Officer Bender's personal dog that she donated to the program when it was founded in December of 2017.
