How does the Adoption Process Work?

We are currently doing all adoptions by appointment only. If you have found a cat at the shelter that you would like to adopt, we can do a no-contact virtual adoption for you and schedule your pickup. Please follow these guidelines for adopting a cat or dog:

1. View available dogs online by clicking the "ADOPTABLE ANIMALS" button above.

2. If the dog you are interested in says (FOSTER) after the name or ID# it is not at the shelter. Please email for assistance in meeting this pet.

3. To meet dogs that are currently at the shelter, please note up to THREE (3) ID#s of the dogs you are interested in and schedule an appointment by clicking THIS LINK.

4. Please complete the ADOPTION APPLICATION prior to your visit. This does not obligate you to adopt, but it will speed up the process if you do find a pet you want to take home.

5. During your appointment time, no more than 2 visitors per party are allowed in the facility at any time (you may bring more, they will just have to wait outside in the play yards) and all members of the party must wear a mask at all times.

We are now offering a no-contact virtual cat adoption process as well as in-person adoption appointments!!
1. View available cats online by clicking the "ADOPTABLE ANIMALS" button above.
2. If the cat you are interested in says (FOSTER) after the name or the ID#, it is not at the shelter. Please email for assistance in meeting this pet.
3. You may choose a cat to adopt based on the photo and description. If you need more information on any cat in the shelter, email or call 512-805-2657.
4. Once you find a cat you would like to adopt, fill out the ADOPTION APPLICATION using the ID# of the cat you would like then CLICK HERE to schedule an appointment to pick up the cat within 3 days of submitting your application. If no appointments are available in that 3-day window, please email or call 512-805-2657.

5. When you arrive for your appointment, your cat and adoption paperwork will be ready for you (unless it has been completed via email prior to your arrival) and finalizing the adoption can be done at your vehicle. Please ensure everyone in your party is wearing a mask at all times.

You may also schedule an appointment to come in and meet the cats if you are not sure which one you would like to adopt.

We will do everything we can to notify you of this if it happens before your appointment and try to suggest a comparable pet for you. Thank you for understanding.

What are the Requirements to Adopt?

  • You must have a valid, Government-Issued I.D. and be 18 or older.  You DO NOT have to be a resident of San Marcos or Hays County - we’ll adopt to good homes from anywhere!
  • You must be open to having a conversation with our adoption counselors and volunteers regarding the best pet options for you.  While there is nothing that prohibits pets being kept primarily outdoors, you must have proper fencing and outside housing ready for your pet to keep it protected from the heat and inclement weather. If you need resources for creating a safe space for your pet inside, please ask - we’d love to help! Pets are almost always happier inside with their family.
  • If you rent your home, you must have received permission from your landlord or property manager to have a pet. If a pet is returned because the landlord would not allow it, you will not receive a refund for your adoption fee.
  • If you are adopting a dog, and you or someone who lives in the home owns a dog, we strongly suggest that you bring that dog to the shelter for a meet & greet first to evaluate compatibility.

What are the Fees to Adopt?

Our regular adoption fees are $94.00 for dogs and cats. However, because of the COVID-19 restrictions, we are offering "Pay What You Want" adoptions for all pets.

For Pets Other Than Cats or Dogs:

Occasionally, SMRAS will care for pets other than cats or dogs such as rabbits, guinea pigs, birds or other small mammals. If you see these pets available on our website, please contact for adoption information and fees.
