City support of public events

In June of 2019, the San Marcos City Council approved a new policy governing the City’s support of public events that goes into effect Oct. 1, 2019. This policy will supersede previous application processes and evaluation criteria. 

This new policy will apply to requests the City receives for in-kind donations and monetary grants as well as provides a procedure to evaluate such requests. This Policy is to provide support to deserving events, which provide a public purpose in the following ways:

  • Providing cultural and educational enrichment
  • Celebrating our unique diversity, history and heritage
  • Enhancing pride and a sense of community
  • Promoting a positive image of the City of San Marcos
  • Endorsing economic vitality

What this means for you

Beginning Oct. 1, 2019, there will be a new, unified application process for all requests for support of public events. Instructions, links to the policy and supporting documents, and the new application will be posted here.  

This application will be the “one-stop shop” for requesting monetary and in-kind assistance for public events—there will be no more need to go to separate City departments to ask for various forms of in-kind and monetary assistance.

An important change this new policy institutes is a 30 percent limit for City support of eligible event costs, which includes both in-kind (City personnel time, services, etc.) and monetary support.
