Registration is open for the City of San Marcos Master Compost Certification Program, which will take place in October and November at the San Marcos Discovery Center, 430 Riverside Dr. Registration is $20 and the certification requires 20 hours of classroom time and an additional 20 hours of volunteer time for participants.
The goal of the program is to educate the public and promote composting in the San Marcos community. The guidelines for the certification program are administered by the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling (S.T.A.R.).
“An estimated 20-30% of residential trash waste can be diverted from the landfill and composted,” said Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager Amy Kirwin. “Composted material helps with plant nutrition, soil life and soil structure. These are overall benefits for a healthy lawn and garden with minimal negative impacts to the environment.”
Classroom Dates and Times:
- October 28, 30 and November 4, 6 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
- November 2, 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
