[ARCHIVED] Public Invited to Library Groundbreaking Oct. 3

Library Groundbreaking Ceremony Graphic with details of event

The City of San Marcos is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. to mark the beginning of the expansion and remodel of the current Public Library building at 625 E. Hopkins St. The public is invited to attend.

The library expansion will more than double the size of the library, adding 28,000 square feet to the existing 27,000 square feet. Upon completion in early 2021, the public library will offer modernized spaces including a teen room, makerspace, technology hub and an enclosed children’s area. The library will also include study rooms, conference rooms and a large meeting room that will seat up to 240 people.

“Since about 1,500 people visit the library daily, it is important that our design and programming reflects a sense of community,” said Library Director Diane Insley. “The goal with the expansion is to deliver a contemporary space that continues to meet the needs of our current library patrons while accommodating our growing population.”

The $14.75 million bond project was approved by voters in 2017. PGAL of Austin, TX is the project architect, while JE Dunn Construction of Austin, TX will serve as project contractor.

The groundbreaking program will include Mayor Jane Hughson, Rep. Erin Zwiener, and City staff. Mayor Hughson will also present a proclamation to commemorate the historic event, and elected officials. City leadership and those instrumental to the library project will participate in the ceremonial dirt toss.

The Library will also host an ongoing Open House from Oct.2 through Oct. 3 with historical photos and design renderings on display.
