A man fatally shot a City of San Marcos police officer and wounded two others this evening at Twin Lake Villas Apartments, 2917 Hunter Rd. Police report that the suspect is deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A call to 911 for an assault/domestic disturbance was received at 6:05 p.m. and officers responded to the incident at the apartment complex. During the course of their response, the suspect ambushed the officers with a rifle.
“We are heartbroken to make this announcement,” said Interim Police Chief Bob Klett. “We ask for your support for our fellow officers and their families as we try to cope with yet another tragic event in our San Marcos Police family.”
The two surviving officers were transported to Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle where they have undergone surgery. All families have been notified.
This is the second line of duty death for the San Marcos Police Department since Officer Kenneth Copeland was shot and killed while serving a warrant on December 4, 2017.
The San Marcos Police Department will hold a press conference at 10 a.m., Sunday, April 19 at Fire Station 5, 100 Carlson Circle. Media should plan to wear face masks due to COVID-19 precautions, the City will have masks on hand also. For questions, contact communicationsinfo@sanmarcostx.gov.
