[ARCHIVED] San Marcos Activity Center Closed Due to Water Damage

Activity Center Closed

The San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E Hopkins Street, will be closed indefinitely due to water damage that occurred inside the building in the early morning hours of Friday, Oct. 29, 2021. Initial reports indicate that the flooding appears to be the result of a 3” poly pipe that disconnected from its coupler, causing several inches of water to cover the entire facility.

San Marcos Police officers were flagged down at approximately 3 a.m. after a resident saw water coming from the building. Officers notified the San Marcos Fire Department and crews successfully shut off water to the building.

City staff arrived onsite early Friday morning and began remediation efforts. The City’s insurance carrier has been notified and is assessing damage and providing assistance where possible.

Current memberships will be suspended, and automatic payments will be placed on hold during this time. Customers with items remaining in their lockers are asked to contact the Activity Center for assistance retrieving belongings.

Activity Center staff are working to identify alternative recreation options and meeting space to offer to the community. Total Wellness classes will continue virtually. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the City’s sidewalks, trails, and natural areas while the Activity Center remains closed.

The San Marcos Activity Center opened to the public in 1997 following a $5.3 million bond election that passed in 1994. The facility celebrated its 20-year anniversary in 2017, and a remodel project recently updated the locker rooms, restrooms, and carpeting.
