Legends of Tejano Music 

Thursday, Sept. 20

6 – 7:30 p.m.

Join Hector Saldaña, Music Curator of the Wittliff Collection, and Ramon Hernandez, Tejano Musicologist, as they discuss the generational rise of Tejano Music from its regional folk roots to the 1990s Golden Age of the Tejano Music industry.

Mariachi y Más! 

Saturday, Sept. 29

10 a.m.-12 p.m.

To honor Hispanic Heritage Month, the library is holding a family friendly fiesta with special musical guest Mariachi Nueva Generación, one of the leading university mariachis in Texas, performing at 10 a.m. Then, storyteller Gigi Moreno will lead children in a very special Spanish and bilingual storytime program. Don’t leave without creating colorful and fabulous tissue paper flowers and papel picado to decorate the library and to take home with you!

Film and Discussion: Under the Same Moon

Tuesday, Oct. 2

6 – 8:30 p.m.

Mano Amiga presents the film “Under the Same Moon,” about a single mother who leaves her young son in the care of his grandmother and crosses the border into the U.S. in hopes of a better life for herself and her son. Special guests from Mano Amiga will shed light on the plight of immigrants who have personally taken this journey.


Discussion 

Indigenous Perspectives on Racism

Thursday, Oct. 11

7 -8 p.m.

History books have been notorious for excluding the cultural heritage and the contributions Indigenous people all over the world have made to modern society. Gene Randall, an elder in the Indigenous community, has been a powpow organizer and dancer for three decades, is a host of KZSM radio show “Indigenous Freedom Radio,” and is an advocate of Indigenous issues.


Author Talk 

Dr. Irma N. Guadarrama on Struggles of Women from Central America in Search of a New Life

Monday, Oct. 15

7 -8 p.m.

Enjoy an interactive lecture about research and actual experience working with women in Central America. Dr. Irma N. Guadarrama provides insight on the issues and root problems concerning the migration of the women of Central America who are dealing with social and political concerns.
