The City of San Marcos Employee Group would like to recognize Katie Steele from GIS - Information Technology as the winner of the 3rd Quarterly CIVIC Award. Katie recently took on the initiative to improve the map-ping of the San Marcos Greenspaces by actively GPS-ing the Greenspace trails before and after flooding events, adding QR codes at the trail heads to allow users to download virtual trail maps to their phone, and assisted in adding 911 address points for all trail markers.

Katie took on this initiative because of her passion for GIS in the field of Emergency Management and Fire and Rescue and worked outside of her normal job duties to not only improve the park user experience, but to also ensure that citizens can enjoy parks safely and reliably. On July 3rd, dispatch received a call from a park user who had broken their ankle on the Spring Lake Greenspace trail. The caller used the trail markers to identify their location and the Fire Department was able to locate the citizen quickly using the maps created by Katie. Through her initiative, Katie has spent countless hours ensuring that trail data is displayed with the greatest level of accuracy and has added valuable functionality to the trail experience. Her work is meaningful to Emergency Responders as well as the community.
