San Marcos Nature Center
Butterfly House


The San Marcos Nature Center Butterfly House officially opened on May 20, 2010. The Butterfly House was funded by the Mitchell Foundation and is operated and maintained by the City of San Marcos. The house provides plants, nectar sources, and habitat for nine local butterfly species:
- Gulf Fritillary
- Monarch
- Giant Swallowtail
- Black Swallowtail
- Painted lady
- Zebra Longwing
- Red Admiral
- American Lady
- Sulphur
- Queen Butterflies
The Butterfly House also has a separate nursery for some of the butterfly cocoons and is located inside our Nature Center, allowing guests to view this fascinating stage of development.
Tours will be given based on staff availability. Sschedule a tour in advance by calling 393-8447 or 8449 . The cost is $1 per person ages 12 & older. Children under twelve years of age are free.
