The San Marcos City Cemetery, founded in 1874, is located on 45 acres at 1001 Ranch Road 12 in San Marcos. The cemetery is the burial ground for many Texas pioneers and veterans of wars dating back to the War of 1812. In 2006, the Cemetery marks the 82nd year of City of San Marcos ownership.
The City Cemetery is under the facility management of Parks and Recreation, 512-393-8400. Gene Bagwell of Maintenance Management provides upkeep of the cemetery.
The City Cemetery Commission is appointed by the City Council to advise the City of San Marcos on the historic San Marcos City Cemetery, located at 1001 Ranch Road 12.
The seven-member board meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 4:00 pm at the Grant Harris Jr. Building, 401 E. Hopkins.

The Friends of the Cemetery is a tax-exempt 501 C-3 organization dedicated to improving the cemetery. Donations to this group are tax deductible and monies go to projects such as removing ball moss from the Oak Trees, planting trees, and other improvements to the cemetery. Cemetery lots are available for purchase at the San Marcos City Cemetery. To purchase a lot, residents may contact Victor Gonzales, caretaker (pager number: 512-748-9671). He can make arrangements to show the available cemetery lots.
Once purchasers have selected the lots they wish to purchase, they may pay for them at the Utility Office in the Municipal Building at City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins. (512-393-8170).
