Smart Metering Project

The City of San Marcos is wrapping up the final portion of a 2 year Smart Meter Project and getting the last 800 water meters up and running.

Here's what is presently happening with the project:

• All electric and water meters, except for the large commercial electric customers have been installed.
  
  
• Concerning electrical large commercial accounts, we have installed one meter and are verifying the customer portal before moving the accounts to smart meters.

• Concerning each route, we are slowly moving billing from the manual reading of meters to the Smart Meters. During the 2nd quarter of 2012 we hope to have all account billing will be through the Smart Meters.
  
  
• We're using the Smart Meters to do daily work in the office and to assist with customer calls.

By the 2nd Quarter of 2012, citizens will be able to view their interval data through a web portal on their Utility Billing Web Accounts. As we get closer to the posting the interval data on the web, we'll be providing citizen workshops going over the web portal. The information is very intuitive and will be able to access daily consumption patterns for electric and water accounts. This will allow customers to adjust their usage throughout the month before they receive their bills and also help them identify water leaks.
